It is also the most demanding environment for a screen: sea wind, sand, salt. Here are the key events — and what you need to know to project facing the sea.

Cannes — the Beach Cinema
During the Festival, Macé beach hosts a free screening every evening open to all, deckchairs facing the screen: the official selection on one side of the Croisette, the audience in swimsuits on the other. The most glamorous of the free open-air screenings.
Barcelona — Cinema Lliure a la Platja
Independent cinema, free, right on the sand of Barceloneta: films in their original language, audiences seated on their towels, the Mediterranean as a soundtrack. A Barcelona summer classic.
Valence — the beaches of the province
Summer 2026: free screenings from July 9 to August 28, moving from beach to beach across the province, with screenings at nightfall. The Spanish municipal model applied to the coastline.
And as far as the Baltic Sea
Coastal open-air cinema doesn't stop at the South: in Helsinki, the Malja Open Air Cinema — billed as the largest in Finland — runs throughout August with free entry, cool but packed to the brim.
Projecting facing the sea: four constraints
The seaside combines everything that puts a screen to the test. Four points settled in advance are better than a cancelled evening.
Sea breeze
The thermal breeze rises at sunset — showtime. Our screens hold up to 38 km/h (force 5); beyond that, we deflate in two minutes. Measure before inflating, not after.
Anchoring in sand
Classic stakes don't hold in dry sand: we weigh down — water tanks, sandbags on the anchor legs — and double up the windward points.
Salt and moisture
Saline air attacks electronics and clogs blowers. The airtight range, inflated once then self-sufficient, was born for this environment; the tarp can be rinsed with clean water after the season.
Electricity away from the grid
A beach has no 16 A outlet: use a soundproofed generator away from the public or a high-capacity battery, and marked cable lengths in the sand.
Setting up a beach screening
Obtaining coastal authorization
The beach is public property: authorization must be requested from the municipality, early — and in France, CNC approval is also required for a feature film, as with any open-air screening.
Choosing the layout
Screen facing the sea or facing the sunset depending on the beach's orientation, above the high tide line, emergency exit and firefighter access preserved.
Planning the equipment that goes with it
Airtight screen, ballasting adapted to sand, sound system protected from sea spray, autonomous power supply: the seaside checklist differs from that of the village square.
Play at nightfall
The screening starts at dusk; the pre-show — refreshments, music, sunset — is part of the experience and fills the beach an hour before the film.
Frequently asked questions
Can an inflatable screen be installed directly on sand?
Yes, provided you replace the anchor stakes with ballast — water or sandbags — and double the anchors on the windward side. This is a common setup for our coastal clients.
Which screen should you choose for the seaside?
The airtight range: inflated once, with no blower drawing in salty air all evening, and a projection surface that rinses clean with fresh water. Our dedicated page compares the two ranges.
What to do if the wind picks up during the screening?
Below 38 km/h (force 5), we play. Beyond that, we deflate — two minutes — and we postpone or fold up. Marine weather is checked before inflating, not after.
Can a beach screening be paid?
The dominant model on European beaches is free municipal or sponsored screenings — Cannes, Barcelona, Valencia. Ticketing is possible on a private beach or concession, depending on local rules.
And the evening humidity, for the projection?
The video projector and control desk are placed under cover or in an open flight case, never on sand; sea spray is managed by distance and with a tarp ready to cover. The rest is a matter of clearly routed cabling.
