Open-air cinema at heritage sites in Vietnam and Laos: from free events to secret festivals.
Open-air cinema in Vietnam and Laos remains a low-key phenomenon, often unknown to Western travellers.
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City host a few open-air screenings organised by cultural associations and film enthusiasts. These events are generally free and take place in public spaces: squares, rooftop terraces and university courtyards. Hanoi occasionally hosts open-air film seasons near Hoan Kiem Lake, but there is no fixed schedule, as it depends on the organisers’ goodwill.
In Laos, the city of Luang Prabang stands out. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it hosts the annual Luang Prabang Film Festival, which screens Laotian and regional films at the city’s historic sites, including monasteries and temple courtyards. Screenings are often free or by donation, organised by local cultural associations with the support of the Ministry of Tourism.
In the night markets of Luang Prabang and Vientiane, you’ll also find makeshift screens, though these are more for advertising than proper film screenings.
Open-air cinema at historic sites remains rare and unstructured in Vietnam. In Laos, however, Luang Prabang offers a unique, free experience set against a remarkable heritage backdrop. If you’re a film lover and a traveller, this destination is well worth a visit.
